Last year was the first year that e-books out-sold actual printed books. It has ignited a great book debate among people. Many believe that printed books preserve old traditions. Technology has its place, but it’s also unpredictable.

People who enjoy the new digital books argue that they are far more transportable and almost impossible to damage. They also cost less. In some cases, they don’t cost anything. These are all very persuasive arguments.

Still, there is no replacing that feeling of sitting down with your favorite book, a big steaming mug of coffee and the whole afternoon in front of you. Obviously, it all comes down to your own temperament, but it’s something digital books cannot yet replicate.

It’s not the same with a digital book. The screen doesn’t have the same visual spectrum as paper and if you’re easily distracted by all the other forms of entertainment offered online. With an old fashioned book, you are able to get lost amongst the pages far easier.

There’s also the value to consider. Many first edition printed books are worth quite a lot of money. E-books, on the other hand, are practically a dime a dozen.

Another big difference is the price of books versus the cost of e-books. Generally, a book is going to cost more to purchase, but you’ll be able to place it on your shelf and not have to worry about losing it because of a technological malfunction.

However, there is definitely merit in technology. Without a doubt, the world would be a far more depressing and difficult place and we wouldn’t be able to accomplish as much as can be done nowadays.

This isn’t necessarily true with regard to literature though. Libraries and authors are both suffering from the onslaught of digital printing, and it may be a losing battle.

The Value Of Coming Up With Goals And Successfully Fulfilling Them

Almost everyone has goals in life. However, procrastination is common among many people in regards to working on their goals. Sometimes this is caused by setting unreasonable goals, but most times the problem is simply not having enough time.

It is easy to get discouraged when trying to work on a goal. Many times it can seem like it might take too much time to be able to achieve it, such as losing weight or making a business idea profitable.

It can be difficult to set the time aside to work on goals that might not be realized for many years when most people have more immediate demands on their time. You just need to be able to find the time and start trying to achieve your aspirations.

One trick you should do is imagine what your life would be like now if you had already reached your goals, this may spur you on. Maybe your goal is to get skinny someday, then just think what it would be like to walk down the street right now at your ideal weight.

Just picture how much more additional energy you would have at your disposal, or how wonderful and exciting it would be to purchase new clothes while modeling them in front of the store mirror. If you make it real in your mind, it will motivate you to push on.

Positive visualization will help you out tremendously; just make sure you don’t focus on the negatives. People have a tendency to do so, and this will often discourage you from continuing on your goal.

Even if the goal is quite large, it can seem more achievable if you can visualize the positive effect that achieving the goal will have on your immediate life. In addition, being able to cross that goal off of your to-do list is motivation as well.

Once you become truly committed to achieving a goal, try setting some smaller measurable goals that you can work on in pursuit of your larger goal. After all, taking the first step is often the hardest part of achieving any goal.

The first element you need is time. You must put in enough time to not only prepare the lesson, but also decide how much time is necessary to explain the subject to a particular student. The other consideration when teaching a foreign language student is whether it translates well or whether simpler words and explanations need to be used.

Patience is the second key element in teaching. Remember, the person you are tutoring wouldn’t need you if they understood the subject matter. Don’t bother tutoring if you are not willing to possibly repeat explanations and answer many questions.

When a student is having difficulties understanding a certain element of the lesson plan, you’ll need to come up with a creative and effective solution. If you have creativity, and good problem solving skills, it will certainly make the tutoring session easier.

When the student involves himself in the discussion, the learning process is improved and becomes more even. The subject is understood quicker and less time is needed to get your point through.

Lastly, when you show genuine concern for your student, tutoring is made even more effective. Students react to the way they are taught and this can be determined by the way they learn. Caring for those you teach makes the task of tutoring a worthwhile experience, especially when you know that your efforts have not been in vain and have produced the results that you expected.

Tutoring can be a very rewarding experience. We all need help sometimes. Always, remember to let your students know that no question is dumb, if they feel they need to ask it!

Increase Your Jumping Ability With These Simple Tips

1-Know how to jump higher

It is one thing for you to know what to do to increase your jumping ability, but it is another thing to actually know why you are doing what you are doing. I want to teach you why you are going to be doing certain things. How much force you can apply to the ground is the most important thing for both the vertical jump and running fast. If you are able to apply more force to the ground then you will be able to jump higher. All you have to do is follow the two things I will mention below and you will be on your way to applying more force to the ground in no time.

2-Squat with heavy weight

Most people assume that weight training is going to slow them down and take away from their vertical jump, but the truth is the more you can squat the more force you will be able to apply to the ground. A good way to think about it is like this, if you have a person who weighs 150 pounds and can squat 135 pounds, he is applying 135 pounds of force to the ground. If you take that same person and increase his squat to 225, he is now applying twice as much force to the ground.

3-Plyometrics

Plyometrics are another great way to apply force to the ground because they help with the speed of the muscles. Some great plyometric exercises include depth jumps and box jumps.

Honesty Begets Honesty In Others

I’ve been in therapy for years now. At the very first, I kept it secret. I was embarrassed, like needing to be in therapy was shameful or meant I had something wrong with me.

Worse, I felt like I was the only one. It seemed like everyone but me was competent to handle things on their own. But then there was me, I needed help, because I was less capable. None of my friends or family needed help like that or so I thought.

Once I started though, I did tell my family and friends that I was seeing a therapist. I even recommended therapy to others, when I thought it would be helpful.

Then a funny thing happened. As I started telling people I was in therapy, I kept hearing from my friends and family that they were in counseling also! They had thought they should keep it secret and this is why I hadn’t known before. Then, when I disclosed I was in therapy, they figured it would be ok to tell me.

I was honored to hear the stories they told me. One friend related how, after both of her parents died at young ages, she was prescribed antidepressants. Another told me about how he’d been fighting depression since middle school. Then my hairdresser told me that she takes anti-anxiety medication for obsessive compulsive disorder.

The people who told me these things said they felt relieved to be able to share the information. They were tired of keeping the secret! I felt like I had support in my struggles, and like I wasn’t alone, just from hearing their stories.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in therapy, it is that everyone struggles with something. Nobody is perfect. That, and it doesn’t help to hide this fact. If we’re open and honest about things instead, this is generally helpful.

If you tell people when there are things going on that are difficult, you’ll probably have people share similar experiences or give you support in other ways. This is very helpful, and really can make you feel a lot better.

The Exciting Manhattan Neighborhoods Visitors Love

Manhattan is a great place for so many reasons. From the city’s energy to the convenience of the stores and attractions to its beauty, both tourists and citizens of New York are bound to fall in love with it.

I’ve always enjoyed the diverse selection of neighborhoods that Manhattan has to offer. Over the years, I’ve tried to explore them all and immerse myself in the culture and personality of each one, but I don’t think I’ll ever have the time to see them all in the kind of detail that I’d like. There’s just too much to see and do in the city.

Here’s a look at a few of my favorite neighborhoods in Manhattan, with the reasons why I love them so much. These neighborhoods definitely make great destinations if you’re planning on visiting New York.

The first neighborhood that I’ll discuss is the East Village. It’s a fun place, with some of my favorite bars and restaurants in all of New York.

The East Village is a popular destination for the 20s and 30s crowd. The neighborhood boasts a huge variety of food, bars, clothing stores, and lounges, all packed into an area smaller than a square mile. The East Village turns into the Lower East Side as you go south; these two neighborhoods are quite similar.

The West Village is also similar to the East Village, but it has a more mature atmosphere. Scenic, tree-lined avenues host a variety of small cafes and boutique clothing retailers in this lively neighborhood.

Looking to visit something less Bohemian, or a neighborhood with a focus on the scenery? You’d feel at home in the Upper West Side, displaying a marriage between the nature and the traditional style of Manhattan. Central Park also provides a beautiful display of nature right in the middle of the city.

These are just a few of the beautiful and unique neighborhoods in Manhattan. I could easily go on and on about my favorites, but it would take all day!

Teach Your Dog To Respect Your Orders

Experts say that dogs are one of the smartest animals. To prove their point, they have shown dogs that can add, flush the toilet bowl, get the newspaper and even play the piano (off tune, of course)!

Dog owners who do not have skills to teach their dog to do anything can try to do so as early as possible while their dog is young. The younger the dog, the easier they are to be taught basic obedience.

Most dog owners would try to teach their dog simple tricks, like how to sit, for instance. A dog cannot learn this command in a day, just as much as learning any other command. Training a dog requires a lot of patience on the part of the trainer as well as ready reward treats on hand.

When you start training, you could give your dog treats for successful commands. However, as you progress, wean him off the treats so that the dog will follow your command because you told him so and not because he wants to get a treat.

As you slowly take out treats from your training process, make sure that you give positive recognition for every command that your dog follows. Dogs associate high-pitched voices, much like baby talk, as a positive reinforcement.

In case your dog does not respond to your command as dogs sometimes do, try to prod him a bit more urgently rather than shouting at him or abuse him physically. Your dog could be distracted or is not feeling comfortable with your command, so you may need to repeat the command in a more authoritative way.

Make sure that you do not stop in day one when teaching your dog any trick. Not all dogs have the same retention.

Some might be able to remember the command overnight, while some might need a week. Just be consistent in teaching him tricks by setting aside about twenty minutes every day for your training.

The already high rate of depression continues to soar across America. In today’s world, it’s not uncommon to personally know someone who suffers from depression. In fact, if anything it’s now the new norm. If you do know someone who is stuck in this situation, what do you do?

Now more than ever, it is important for every single person in this country to know how to deal with these people suffering from depression and how to help them. You could be that person who prevents someone from committing suicide.

If a friend of yours walks up to you and tells you how depressed they are, do not tell him to just get over it and change the topic. Instead, ask the person what makes him feel that way.

When he starts sharing his emotions and feelings, offer your unsolicited advice. Sometimes, these people just need someone they could pour their heart out to and not someone who would lecture them on what they should do instead.

If you feel like your friend is on the brink of going suicidal or if he talks about suicide, do not ignore it. Try to keep him company until such time that you know he is feeling better.

If they claim they are not interested in discussing it, then they really don’t want to. You should make sure you are there for them in their hour of need and try not to be too nosy.

You might not guess it but by just simply being around this person, you could actually prevent them from killing themselves. Many folk who’ve had depression have said that the blackness has lifted when they have been around someone who is compassionate and cares. You should try this compassionate and caring individual.

Finally, it might be that your loved one needs more than your aid. Maybe you should call a doctor or some other medical practitioner, just to ensure that your loved one will get well. Often all the need is some medicine to make them well again.

Hypnotize Your Bad Habit Away

Some people bite their nails, and tell themselves that this is a bad habit that they should go ahead and break. Unfortunately, nail biting is a deeply ingrained behavior pattern, and it’s not so simple as just deciding not to do it anymore.

Plenty of people resolve to stop biting their nails. But then, people make resolutions every New Year about losing weight, and taking up hobbies, and learning a second language and all kinds of other things that also don’t happen. Willpower alone won’t make your nail biting stop. What you need are some actual treatments to help you.

This can sound discouraging but don’t give up. You really do need to stop biting your nails. People who don’t bite their nails find the habit disgusting and will judge you. It’s not socially acceptable, and people will think less of you. Besides that, you may have physical problems from it. Biting your nails can give you sore and red fingertips, and can make you sick because you get the germs on your fingers in your mouth.

There are several different types of nail biting treatments you can try:

Bitter nail polish. This is a common remedy for nail biting. Many people try this but find it isn’t enough. Yes it tastes bad and makes it unpleasant to chew on your nails, but this isn’t enough of a deterrent to be effective. You have an ingrained behavior pattern, and it takes more than a bad taste to make this stop after years of the behavior.

Psychological medications, prescribed by your doctor or psychiatrist. Often these substances are combined with behavioral therapy. If your doctor does decide that this is appropriate for you, you’ll likely be given an anti-depressant or anti-psychotic. These drugs can be very hard on the body though and can have negative side effects. They also are usually only temporarily effective.

Hypnosis for nail biting is another option, and may be a pleasant surprise. First, it has no negative side effects. Secondly, and most importantly, hypnosis works. The key is the way that it is structured. Hypnosis plants suggestions into your subconscious mind. This is the same part of your mind that prompts you to continue in your nail biting.

For many people, nail biting is brought on by emotional stresses and strains. These people nail bite as a sort of ‘nervous tick.’ Hypnosis helps this too. You can use hypnosis to manage stress, which is an important life skill.
